In Josephus ‘spirts’ can act in way which seems to further God’s purposes. In contrast we see that this ‘spirit’ sees the battle lines are drawn. The spirit knows that Jesus has come to destroy us. Part of Jesus kingdom mission is to bring the destruction of forces which are anti-kingdom, forces that are working with people who are part of the covenant community of Israel. The enemy are located within Israel and not just among the gentiles. Within Marks gospel the spirts recongise the true nature of Jesus. See Mark 3:11 and 5:7. The ‘hole one of God’ was not a recognise title within Judaism but is used as a descriptor for those who are in close relation with God (2 Kings 4:9, Psalm 106:16). Jesus is in close relationship with God and his behaviour is different to those who are unholy. The demon has come up against a greater power in the person of Jesus. Jesus speaks to the demon, and he is reluctantly obeyed by the demon. Jesus not only taught with authority(v22) but acts with authority. Word and Praxis go together in the ministry of Jesus. In the church today do we have a unity in our words and praxis?
