Mark 9:1 (ESV)
1 And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”
Jesus states that the kingdom of God will come in power during the lifetime of some of his disciples. Some scholars read this as the ‘second coming’ (parousia) so that Jesus (or Mark, or Jesus Tradition) must have been in error. Yet the passage does not necessarily mean this, it merely looks to a time when the ‘reign of God’ comes with power. This saying is sandwiched between a prediction of Jesus suffering, death and resurrection. Could this not be the meaning of the ‘kingdom of God’ coming in power, when the eschaton (resurrection life) comes into the present, when the age to come arrives in the present age.
